Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment

Project Title: Improving Maternal and Neonatal Health in Myanmar/Myanmar Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Project

In June 2016, the Improving Myanmar Maternal and Neonatal Health Pilot officially launched through the support of Medical Care Development, Inc. (MCD). The Improving Maternal and Neonatal Health project addressed the high burden cervical cancer imposes on Myanmar's women, as well as incorporating malaria prevention and emergency neonatal and obstetric care interventions.

Throughout the course of the project, MCDI:

  • Screened 3,467 women for cervical cancer through mobile screenings campaigns. 85 women were treated with cold coagulation devices immediately after testing positive for cervical lesions during the screening.
  • Research conducted on the first use of cold coagulators in the treatment of precancerous lesions in Myanmar.
  • Facilitated donations of cold coagulation therapy devices to be used in health centers.
  • Supplied Enhanced Visual Inspection devices to each screening site.
  • Distributed 3,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) to mothers through antenatal services providers in collaboration with Yat Sawk Township
  • Conducted training sessions for health workers on basic emergency obstetrics and neonatal care (BEmONC)
